Homeware food contact testing

Products that come into contact with food must not transfer materials onto the food that will affect its taste or quality. To make sure this doesn’t happen, the products must be rigorously tested. During testing, the product is exposed to a range of food simulants. Contact tests are carried out at high temperatures and over long periods of time. They check for the release of specific metals, specific monomers and restricted phthalates. In the EU these requirements for plastic items are governed by commission regulations 10/2011EU, as amended.
